The September Dispatch: Sweater Weather, Sort Of...

If July was the World Cup and August was the comedown, September is Atlanta doing its favorite trick: pretending it's fall while it's still 88 degrees at 6pm. We're not falling for it, and neither should you! the porches are out, the fire pits are getting cleaned off, and every kitchen in this city is crawling towards what we HOPE to be a chill in the air (boasting pumpkin, butternut squash etc. etc.).

Regardless, this is the month we start planning the cozy stuff. Long weekends before the holidays get complicated. A trip that's an excuse for a good meal and a porch with a view. By all means, soak up all the remaining juice that summer is offering here in the southeast, book your last minute stays OR start bringing out those sweaters and getting ready as the leaves change!

September To-Do's: The Short List

​Shaky Knees Festival (September 18–20, Piedmont Park)

Three days of indie and rock at Piedmont Park, headlined this year by The Strokes, Twenty One Pilots, and Gorillaz, with LCD Soundsystem and Wu-Tang Clan also on the bill. One of the city's biggest festival weekends — expect the neighborhood to be buzzing.

​UPS Second Sunday (September 13)

Free admission all day at the High Museum of Art. An easy, no-plan-required way to spend a Sunday downtown.

​Reynoldstown Wheelbarrow Festival (September 19)

A neighborhood staple at Lang-Carson Park — local art, food, and music in one of Atlanta's most tight-knit communities.

​The Wizard of Oz — Center for Puppetry Arts (September 16–27)

Marionette puppetry meets the Yellow Brick Road. A genuinely lovely one if you're traveling with kids, or just want something different from the usual night out.

​North Georgia State Fair (September 24 – October 4)

Rides, fair food, and the first real "it's fall now" event of the season at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta.

Explore digital creativity, screenings, and industry panels at SCAD.

Fall-Forward Menus: Where to Eat This Month

1. Sozou (Midtown)

The newest concept from the chef behind Umi, just opened in the Ten Twenty Spring building. High expectations, high delivery.

2. Enzo Italian Steakhouse (Epicurean Atlanta, Midtown)

A proper Italian steakhouse for the season of heavier appetites and longer dinners.

3. Ghee Indian Kitchen (Star Metals, West Midtown)

James Beard semifinalists behind the kitchen, with a 13-course tasting menu built on Georgia-sourced produce.

4. Close Company (Old Fourth Ward)

Death & Co.'s casual sister bar, with a pastry pocket lineup that includes a cinnamon apple version that might be the most fall thing on this whole list.

5. Heritage (Summerhill, opening mid-September)

New African fine dining concept from the neighborhood that's had one of the best restaurant runs in the city this year.

6. Broad Street BBQ (South Downtown)

A smokehouse with a bar program from a BoccaLupo alum and a full lineup of Southern sides. Built for the first cool-weather weekend of the year.

7. CVI.CHE 105 (Phipps Plaza, Buckhead)

Peruvian, opening this fall add it to your list ASAP!

8. Underground Diner (Underground Atlanta)

Fried catfish and grits, chicken and waffles, steak and eggs; comfort food anchoring Underground's comeback.

9. Auxiliary Coffee (Star Metals)

Not dinner, but a well-made coffee shop worth a slow morning sit and sip.
