July's Dispatch: Post-World Cup Blues

If you caught our special hospitality update, boy do I have a reprise.

I thought I understood hospitality and then the whole world showed up on the doorstep of several American cities.

For weeks now, our feeds (and probably yours) were an endless scroll of international fans discovering America in real time and we have been laughing and crying on a near-daily basis over here. Visitors treating a 1am Waffle House run like fine dining. Fans filming free refills and complimentary ice water like they'd found buried treasure. Scottish supporters in kilts belting "Take Me Home, Country Roads" with total strangers. And right here in Atlanta, thousands of people from every corner of the earth packing Centennial Olympic Park, cheering for countries that aren't theirs, hugging people they met twenty minutes ago.

But the videos that really get us aren't about the food...A visitor saying "I didn't expect people to be this kind." Fans invited to backyard barbecues by families they'd just met. Strangers offering rides, recommendations, their favorite corner table. Someone put it in a way we can't stop thinking about: people remember people more than places. You can forget a final score. You never forget the person who said "welcome." Mimicking the exact experience we have had in our travels from person to person and trip to trip.

It’s incredibly motivating.

That's why we do what we do. Every welcome guide, every neighborhood recommendation, every "text us if you need anything" is a small bet that hospitality changes how people experience a place and this summer we got to watch that bet pay off on the world's biggest stage, in our own city. Hosting guests from around the globe these past weeks, seeing Atlanta through their eyes, the green of it, the food, the way strangers talk to you here, has made us fall in love with this city all over again.

We won't deny that we're feeling the post-world cup blues, but are ready to welcome the next group of visitors to the city which hopefully includes you!

The Falcons open preseason at home against Baltimore. A good excuse to get back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and remember what football season feels like.

​Scott Antique Market (August 6–9)

One of the Southeast's largest antique markets returns to the Atlanta Expo Centers with thousands of vendors. If you collect, hunt, or just love the thrill of finding something unexpected, this is the event.

​August Threepeat: Shakespeare at the Shakespeare Tavern (August 6 – September 5)

The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse presents three plays in repertory: The Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, and Twelfth Night. See them in any order, any night. A celebration of one of summer's most rewarding theater experiences.

​Glow Nights After Hours at the Georgia Aquarium (August 7)

A special after-hours experience at the Georgia Aquarium featuring live acrobatic performances, cocktails and mocktails, and DJ music. One of the most atmospheric ways to experience the aquarium.

The R&B icon returns to State Farm Arena for a night of the hits that defined a generation. One of the most anticipated concerts of the summer.

Country legend Chris Stapleton brings his All-American Road Show to Mercedes-Benz Stadium with special guests Lainey Wilson and Ashley McBryde. One of the summer's biggest concert events, and a chance to hear some of the year's best live music.

​R&B Lovers Tour: Keith Sweat, Dru Hill & Ginuwine (August 28)

A celebration of '90s R&B comes to State Farm Arena with three legendary artists. If you grew up in the '90s or just love the genre, this is the night.

10 Atlanta Spots Worth Knowing About Right Now: Summer Edition

1. Busy Bee Cafe at Atlantic Station​

The James Beard America's Classics and Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized soul food institution just opened its second location. Fried chicken, dressing, greens, and peach cobbler. Do not skip the peach cobbler.

2. Koshu Club (Buckhead)

From the team behind Michelin-starred Mujo, this intimate new restaurant pairs charcoal-grilled seafood and meats with premium sake and cocktails in a Japanese midcentury modern space. One of the most buzzed-about openings of the year.

3. Heritage Supper Club (Summerhill)

A cocktail lounge, a multi-course tasting menu dining room, and a dedicated dessert experience, all under one roof. Chef Demetrius Brown is doing something ambitious here and it's worth the reservation.

4. Aire Rooftop Bar (Downtown)

A new rooftop at 207 Peachtree with a retractable roof, firepit seating, and an indoor-outdoor bar. Downtown is having a moment and this is part of why.

5. Patria Cocina (Southside BeltLine)

Mezcal, tacos, margaritas, and a patio right on the BeltLine Southside Trail. The best combination of location and vibe on the trail right now.

6. Sugar Loaf (South Downtown)

Southern-inspired and globally influenced, drawing from the owners' Ethiopian and Albanian heritages. Started as a farmers market stall, now a full restaurant. The kind of place Atlanta does well.

7. Some Luck (Poncey-Highland)

From the Talat Market chefs, this basement-level Thai dive bar serves noodle soups, wings, and late-night bites alongside Thai-ingredient cocktails and pitchers of Singha. One of the most anticipated openings of the summer.

8. Sargent (Old Fourth Ward)

Wood-fired American cooking with French influence, a BeltLine-facing patio, high ceilings, and shelves of art books. From the team behind Lucian Books & Wine, which tells you the vibe.

9. Azara (Old Fourth Ward)

Sits right on the BeltLine with a rooftop, live events, and a menu inspired by the world's longevity hotspots. Wellness-forward without being precious about it.
