The October Dispatch: Okay, Now It's Fall! (Please)

The October Dispatch: Okay, Now It's Fall! (Please)

Last month we said we weren't falling for it. This month? We're still not falling for it. We're in the second fake out of the season BUT there's hope on the horizon with some crisp chilly mornings gracing us lately. Still, in great anticipation, the porch blankets are out, we're unpacking some sweaters and stocking up on firewood. I know we say every month is Atlanta's best, but October really is a strong contender. If not the city, then Northeast Georgia definitely takes the win with scenic byways to view the changing leaves and alllll the festivals you could dream up.

So, if you've been waiting for the right time to book that fall weekend, this is your sign. Grab a sweater (a light one, let's be real) and come stay a while.

Featured Stays

Fall in Atlanta is all about being in the neighborhood(s): walking to dinner, catching a parade, then coming home to somewhere that feels warm and cozy. Here are our picks for the month:

Summerhill Townhouse

Okay, you caught us. We said this was our pick last month and it's back on the list. I don't think you know just how good it feels to be sipping on a fresh coffee, sitting in this sun-soaked living room and enjoy golden hour at its finest. It's the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, a girls weekend or even treating yourself to a luxury work-from-home spot.

Reynoldstown Retreat

A private escape for a quick weekend downtown, we think it's a pretty romantic stay. Newly added Sauna, a hot tub and a very cozy 1BR stay to start bringing on the cozy of fall, come check out all Reynoldstown has to offer.

The Designer House on the BeltLine

This one stays on the list this month purely because of it's porchability. The insides boast a designers paradise with curated rooms, a record player and a all around comfort. With a deck out back and a porch out front, you won't miss getting out into the fresh air this month and enjoying the neighborhood.

October To-Do's: The Short List

Taste of Atlanta: Grand Tasting Midtown (October 15, Epicurean Atlanta)

This is a great excuse to sample half the city's restaurant scene in one night.

Little 5 Points Halloween Festival & Parade (October 17–18)

It's the biggest, weirdest, most wonderful Halloween celebration in the Southeast. There are 100+ art vendors, live music, roaming creatures and stilt walkers on Saturday, and the legendary parade down Moreland Avenue on Sunday afternoon. Costumes are strongly encouraged.

Scarecrows in the Garden (Atlanta Botanical Garden, all month)

Whimsical scarecrows set against fall color make for an easy, lovely afternoon, especially with kids.

Boo at the Zoo (Zoo Atlanta, select October weekends + Halloween night)

This is a family-friendly trick-or-treat that's actually fun for the grown-ups too.

Leaf-Peeping on the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway (North Georgia, late October)

Trade the city for the mountains for a day. This 40-mile loop through the Chattahoochee National Forest is about two hours north of Atlanta, and it's one of the best fall color drives in the Southeast. Pull off at the overlooks, stop in Helen for a pretzel, and head back to the city in time for dinner. Peak color usually hits in the last week of October into early November, so plan accordingly!

Cozy Season Eats: Where to Eat This Month

1. Heritage (Summerhill)

We teased it last month, and now it's open! Chef Demetrius Brown's new spot is the latest addition to Summerhill's incredible run.

2. Mule Train (South Downtown)

This one opened at the very end of September from Mike and Shyretha Sheats. It's a brand-new addition to South Downtown's growing food scene.

3. JuNi (Midtown)

A sushi and omakase spot at 12th and Juniper, expected to open this month. Put it on your list for a special-occasion dinner.

4. Joystick Gamebar + Mambo Zombi (East Atlanta Village)

An arcade bar and tiki bar under one roof, opening this month. It's a perfect rainy-night plan, and it's walkable from our EAV Retreat.

5. Close Company (Old Fourth Ward)

We're keeping this one from last month because that cinnamon apple pastry pocket is even more appropriate now.

6. Che Butter Jonez (Near Brookhaven)

This started as a food truck and became a cult favorite, serving "refined ratchet" comfort food inspired by Queens, New York. Go for the famous lamb burger, the chicken pitas, or one of their bodega-style breakfast sandwiches. It's the kind of spot where the regulars all know each other and you'll want to become one.

Little Tart in Summerhill The September Dispatch: Sweater Weather, Sort Of... If July was the World Cup and August was the comedown, September is Atlanta doing its favorite trick: pretending it's fall while it's still 88 degrees at 6pm. We're not falling for it, and neither should you! the porches are out, the fire pits are getting cleaned off, and every kitchen in this city is crawling towards what we HOPE to be a chill in the air (boasting pumpkin, butternut squash etc. etc.). Regardless,...

July's Dispatch: Post-World Cup Blues If you caught our special hospitality update, boy do I have a reprise. I thought I understood hospitality and then the whole world showed up on the doorstep of several American cities. For weeks now, our feeds (and probably yours) were an endless scroll of international fans discovering America in real time and we have been laughing and crying on a near-daily basis over here. Visitors treating a 1am Waffle House run like fine dining. Fans filming free...

June's Dispatch: Hospitality Edition The World Cup is here! Atlanta is welcoming the world this month, and that word welcome has been on our minds more than usual. Because right now, as guests from every corner of the globe are looking for a place to land in this city, we've been asking ourselves the same question we always come back to: what does it actually mean to make someone feel at home? We think we have an answer. And it starts with a bottle of wine... Hospitality, Embodied. A few...
