The May Dispatch: Atlanta's Golden Window

May's Travel Dispatch

May in Atlanta is truly one of my favorite months. The humidity hasn't arrived yet, the azaleas have just peaked and given way to magnolias, and the whole city is in that narrow, golden window between spring festivals and summer heat. The Braves are home, the BeltLine is packed by noon, and the World Cup is one month out which means right now hosts a nice and calm moment before Atlanta becomes one of the most talked-about cities. Come enjoy it before the rest of the world shows up!

May To-Do’s in Atlanta: The Short List

Atlanta Braves Home Games (All Month)

The Braves are home all month with multiple series. The Battery continues to be one of the better pre- and post-game scenes in baseball; good restaurants, good energy, and worth going even if you're not a die-hard fan.

31 Days of Jazz (All Month)

One of the oldest traditions in the city, dating back to 1858. The route runs down Peachtree Street near the Woodruff Arts Center; easy to catch on foot if you’re staying in Midtown or nearby neighborhoods.

Breakaway Music Festival: (May 15-16)

Bringing one of the country's biggest electronic music touring acts to the city for a two-day, multi-stage experience. Known for massive LED walls, pyrotechnics, and a lineup that balances global headliners with rising talent, it's a can't-miss weekend for EDM fans!

MomoCon (May 21–24)

Atlanta's beloved anime, gaming, and comics convention returns to the GWCC for four days of panels, cosplay, celebrity voice actors, and a massive open gaming hall. This year marks 21 years of MomoCon in Atlanta it's grown into the largest event of its kind in the southeastern U.S. Family-friendly, wildly fun, and a great energy boost downtown.

Atlanta Jazz Festival (May 23-25)

The 49th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival returns to Piedmont Park for Memorial Day weekend with three days of free live music spanning jazz, R&B;, soul, hip-hop, and funk. This year's headliners include The Roots, Kamasi Washington, Esperanza Spalding, PJ Morton, and Christian McBride & Ursa Major. Free admission. One of Atlanta's best weekends of the year.

10 Atlanta Spots Worth Knowing About Right Now: Patios + Local Chefs Edition

1. Sugar Loaf (South Downtown )

Owners Nebi and Lindsay Berhane describe their concept as "Southern-inspired" and "globally influenced," pulling from their Ethiopian and Albanian heritages; starting as a farmers market stall and graduating to a full restaurant this spring.

2. The Bank Bar (Midtown)

Old-school Italian comfort gets a polished modern rewrite; from-scratch pastas, locally sourced seafood, and standouts like veal parmesan and tagliatelle Bolognese, alongside a serious bourbon list and cocktail program.

3. Patria Cocina (Southside Beltline)

Owned by Roxana Aguirre, who serves as a storyteller through food, highlighting Mexico's rich culture through a bar program known for its mezcal and tequila selection sourced from different states across Mexico. The patio sits right on the Beltline Southside Trail; tacos, margaritas, and people-watching in one shot.

4. El Ponce (Poncey-Highland)

Owned by Rosa Thurnher, a graduate of the James Beard Foundation Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership program, serving traditional Mexican flavors, locally made empanadas, braised pork burritos, on a mostly covered patio built for lingering. A quieter, neighborhood alternative to the busier Beltline corridor.

5. Heritage Supper Club (Georgia Avenue)

Chef Todd Richards and Brandon Blanchard are opening a 10-course tasting menu restaurant exploring the cuisines of Black cultures worldwide — guests start with cocktails in the lounge, then move to the dining room. It's the kind of ambitious, point-of-view restaurant Georgia Avenue has been waiting for — and the kind that puts a street on the map.

6. Some Luck (Poncey-Highland)

From Talat Market chefs Parnass Savang and Rod Lassiter, this basement-level Thai dive bar will serve a decidedly Thai-focused menu of bar snacks, noodle soups, wings, and late-night bites inspired by street stalls throughout Thailand; alongside quick-fired cocktails made with Thai ingredients and pitchers of Singha. One of the most anticipated openings of the summer.

7. Sargent (Old Fourth Ward)

From the team behind Lucian Books & Wine, this BeltLine-facing restaurant centers on wood-fired American cooking layered with French influence;seafood, shellfish, roasted meats, and seasonal produce at dinner, with lighter sandwiches and salads at lunch. High ceilings, a covered patio, and shelves stocked with art and design books round it out.

8. Azara (Old Fourth Ward / Beltline)

Sitting right off the Beltline, Azara pulls its menu from "longevity hotspots", places around the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives, drawing Mediterranean, Asian, and Latin flavors into a dinner spot and social hub with live events, music, and a rooftop. Wellness-forward without being precious about it.

9. Babygirl (East Lake)

Chef Hudson Rouse of Whoopsie's and Bib Gourmand–recognized Pure Quill Superette is bringing an all-day café to East Lake centered on produce-driven plates, smoothies, breakfast salads, and a limited supply of biscuits; plus wine and cocktails before 5 p.m. for neighbors who don't want to leave the hood for a good meal.

10. Babs (Midtown)

CIA-trained Chef Adler rotates the menu weekly; one visit might be a well-spiced Tunisian shakshuka, the next a cowboy breakfast with house-made BBQ stew and cornbread. On the first Monday of every month he flips it into an affordably priced prix-fixe supper club where two people can eat with a bottle of wine for under $100. It usually sells out. Worth signing up for.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off June 15, and Atlanta is ready. Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host eight matches five group stage games, a Round of 16, and a semifinal running through July 15. Spain, Morocco, South Africa, and more will play right here.
